Brain Cancer Australia recently announced the appointment of two new board directors, each bringing exceptional expertise to our mission.
PROFESSOR JOHN SIMES AO
A leading neuro-oncologist, epidemiologist, and clinical trials expert, John is among the top 2% of most cited researchers globally. He has contributed to over 400 peer-reviewed articles, significantly shaping current medical knowledge and practice. As Founding Director of the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre at the University of Sydney, John has been a leader in improving health outcomes through clinical research.
A Professor of Clinical Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney, he received an Order of Australia (AO) in 2020 for his contributions to education and medicine in cancer research and clinical trials. John has been integral to the Brain Cancer Australia National Consortium since 2015 and serves on its Steering Committee.
RENE SUGO
Rene, an entrepreneur, co-founded the Australian tech disruptor Symbio, leading it for 15 years until its acquisition by Aussie Broadband in 2024. As CEO, he transformed Symbio into Australia's leading provider of Voice over Internet infrastructure, expanding operations across the Asia Pacific and establishing partnerships with global giants like Google and Microsoft.
Before Symbio, Rene worked as an engineer with CSIRO. He has been a keen supporter of the Bike Ride for Brain Cancer for many years, both as a cyclist raising funds and through Symbio’s sponsorship of the event.
Please join us in welcoming John and Rene to the Board.
