We are parents, partners, doctors, scientists, and people who have seen the awful impact of brain cancer.
When Lucie Leonard was diagnosed with brain cancer, her mother Robyn was shocked that survival rates for brain cancers had barely shifted in 40 years.
Tragically, Lucie died at 34 after a seven-year battle. Robyn was left with her grief – and with love for Lucie that had nowhere to go.
One day, Robyn started up the little car that had been Lucie’s last, and drove to see Lucie’s neurosurgeon, Professor Michael Besser.
There were many trips after that – to talk to other doctors, research organisations, and the shocked, grieving families who’d also lost someone they love to brain cancer.
Together, they identified where they could make the greatest impact on patient outcomes and came up with a plan to focus on research infrastructure.
That little red car did hundreds of kilometres and was patched up and repainted more than a few times, but Robyn continued in her pursuit to honour Lucie.
Robyn’s love and tireless work helped create a consortium of 89 leading brain cancer doctors and researchers, and a charity called Brain Cancer Australia which gives Australians a way to fund more breakthroughs – faster.
Lucinda 'Lucie' Leonard, 1978 - 2012
We refuse to accept that so many Australians die waiting for brain cancer research to deliver lifesaving care and treatments.
Brain Cancer Australia’s vision is to defeat brain cancer.
Our mission is to give everyone who can help defeat brain cancer what they need to do it.
Enabling more brain cancer research is key.
Brain Cancer Australia – together with everyone in the community who’ll help – is building the brain cancer research infrastructure that’s been missing for far too long.
It will help bring researchers, clinicians and patients together in a way that has never happened before – and resource them to get life-saving treatments and care to Australians with brain cancer.
“I want Lucie’s legacy to be a well-resourced brain cancer research sector in Australia, and a day when patients and families will hear: ‘There’s more we can do for you – this cancer can be defeated’.”
- Robyn Leonard, Founding Director, Brain Cancer Australia
