Meet Professor Cedric Bardy: Advancing brain cancer research and lab methods for studying brain cells
It was the sheer complexity of the human brain that drew Professor Cedric Bardy to a career researching brain disorders and advancing lab methods for studying brain cells.
Cedric is a Professor at Flinders University, a Director of the Laboratory for Human Neurobiology located at South Australia Health and Medical Research Institute and a member of Brain Cancer Australia’s National Consortium of leading clinicians and researchers.
“My scientific curiosity was originally piqued by both the difficulty of researching the brain and the fact that we were not able to fix most brain disorders, which disrupt the lives of so many people,” said Cedric.
His greatest professional achievement is the development of BrainPhys, a tissue culture medium improving the function of human brain cells in vitro, which is now used routinely by several thousands of research labs world-wide.
After starting his own research group a few years ago, Cedric decided to focus on glioblastoma – a decision inspired by the loss of his auntie to the disease when he was a teenager.
“It left my little cousins without a mum, and I never forgot the devastating consequences of glioblastoma,” he shared.
Cedric is currently focused on tailoring brain cancer treatments to better suit individual patients, recognising that treatments for brain cancer are rarely one size fits all. With a firm belief in the importance of resources to push the work of researchers further, Cedric joined the consortium to be part of a collaboration focused on the ultimate goal of defeating brain cancer.
Cedric joins 88 other leading clinicians and researchers in our national consortium. See the full list of members here.
